Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) is in second place after the first day of the heptathlon competition at the NCAA Division III indoor championship meet, hosted by Birmingham-Southern College on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Newman compiled 2919 points in Friday's 4 events. Will Daniels of Central (Iowa) leads the field with 3105 points, and Central teammate Ryan Kruse is in third place with 2889 points.
Newman opened the day with a clocking of :07.27 in the 60-meter dash, good for fifth overall and 789 points. His leap of 21-4 in the long jump was sixth overall and added 697 points, and his throw of 41-1¾ in the shot put was fourth-best on the day and brought in 639 points. Newman saved his best performance for last on Friday, clearing 6-6¼ in the high jump to place second overall and collect 794 points.
The NCAA Division III championship meet continues on Saturday with the conclusion of the heptathlon, as well as freshman Cade Richeson (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) competing in the shot put at 11 a.m.
