Ohio Wesleyan 12, Allegheny 4

Sophomore first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) drove in 4 runs and pitched 2.0 innings of hitless relief to spark Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Friday at Littick Field.

Originally part of a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, the game was moved to Friday because of the forecast for thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon.  The second game of the series is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday at Littick Field.

The Bishops built a 4-0 lead in the second, with freshman catcher Zack Stiteler (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) knocking in a run with a fielder's choice.  Batting with the bases loaded later in the inning, sophomore outfielder Jon Erhard (Newark/Newark Catholic) lined a single to center to score a pair of runs, with senior outfielder Michael Blatchford (Shaker Heights) scoring all the way from first on Gator centerfielder Bret Kelly's error on the play.

Allegheny rallied to within 4-3 in the fifth, highlighted by Cullen Flaherty's 2-run double, but freshman outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) knocked in a run in the bottom of the inning and McWilliams lined a 2-run single in the sixth to extend the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 7-3.

Flaherty plated a run in the seventh to bring the Gators within 7-4, but McWilliams came on in relief to start the top of the eighth and fanned a pair of Gator hitters to strand a runner at first base.

Ohio Wesleyan pulled away in the bottom of the eighth, pushing across 5 runs with the help of a 2-run triple by McWilliams and a 2-run single by Antle.

The Gators loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth, but McWilliams
again struck out a pair of Allegheny hitters to get out of the inning.

Erhard was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, while McWilliams was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI and Stiteler went 2-for-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.  Senior righthander Kevin Zullo (Hudson) pitched the first 7.0 innings, striking out 3 and walking none, to record the win, and McWilliams was credited with a save.

Nate Pastorek was the starting and losing pitcher for Allegheny.
