Baseball Splits at Wabash

Sophomore shortstop Carter Franklin (Wooster/Canton Central Catholic) and senior outfielder Michael Blatchford (Shaker Heights) plated 2 runs apiece to help Ohio Wesleyan past Wabash in the opener of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Crawfordsville, Ind.

In the nightcap, the Little Giants rallied for the last 4 runs of the game to salvage a split of the twinbill.

Freshman outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) singled home a run to break a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of the opener, and Franklin knocked in a run in the sixth to give the Bishops a 3-1 lead.  Ohio Wesleyan pushed across 3 runs in the seventh, highlighted by an RBI double by senior second baseman Matthew Messick (Dublin/Scioto), and increased the margin to 7-1 on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) in the eighth.

Wabash rallied in the bottom
of the eighth, parlaying 2 hits, 3 walks and an error into 4 runs to close within 7-5.

Franklin singled in an insurance run in the top of the ninth for the 8-5 final.

McWilliams went 3-for-5 and Blatchford was 3-for-6 with 3 runs scored for Ohio Wesleyan.  Junior righthander Jackson Brownstein (Houston, Texas/Bellaire) worked the first 5.2 innings, scattering 5 hits, to record the win, and senior righthander Kevin Zullo (Hudson) got the final 5 outs to collect a save.

Sean Smith was the starting and losing pitcher for Wabash.

Freshman catcher Matt Deskins (Mason)
singled in a run, Antle laced an RBI double, and Messick lofted a sacrifice fly as Ohio Wesleyan raced to a 3-0 first-inning lead in the nightcap, and Blatchford and McWilliams knocked in runs in the second to stretch the margin to 5-0.

Bradon Nelson drove in a run in the bottom of the second and Wabash followed with 5 more runs in the third to take the lead at 6-5, but the Bishops retook the lead on McWilliams' sacrifice fly in the fourth and made it 8-6 on Blatchford's RBI single in the sixth.

The Little Giants closed to within 8-7 in the seventh on a Bryce Aldridge sacrifice fly and took the lead for good with 3 runs in the eighth, with Aldridge's 2-run single breaking an 8-8 tie.

Deskins was 3-for-4 for the Bishops, while Blatchford finished at 3-for-5 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.  Sophomore righthander Cody Brown (Lebanon) was charged with the loss in relief.
