Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) contributed 3 goals and 3 assists during a 7-0 run that helped the Bishops pull away as 7th/9th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday in Wooster.
With the win, the Bishops clinched the NCAC championship, Ohio Wesleyan's 20th in the 34 seasons of NCAC competition. Ohio Wesleyan will be the No. 1 seed in next week's tournament and will face fourth-seeded DePauw in a tournament semifinal contest at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
The Fighting Scots got goals by Cullen Kuhn and Sam Kuhn less than a minute apart to take a 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the game.
Junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) evened the score at 2 courtesy of an assist from Hildebrand, and Tennant put the Bishops ahead to stay with a goal at the 9:13 mark of the opening quarter. Senior midfielder Luke Leyden (Northfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon) made it 4-2 with an unassisted goal midway through the first period.
The hosts were still within 5-4 after a Sam Kuhn goal early in the second quarter, but Ohio Wesleyan closed out the half with a 6-0 run that included 3 goals by Hildebrand and 2 from Tennant. Tennant scored a pair of man-up goals less than a minute apart during the waning minutes of the quarter, sandwiching a Hildebrand goal during a burst of 3 Ohio Wesleyan goals in a span of 53 seconds that gave the Bishops an 11-4 lead at the intermission.
Hildebrand led the Bishops with 4 goals and 4 assists, while Jeschke finished with 3 goals and 2 assists and Tennant tallied 3 goals. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) went the distance in the Ohio Wesleyan crease, recording 8 saves.
Sam Kuhn had 4 goals and an assist for Wooster. Wesley Wagner and Jackson Parker combined for 18 saves for the Fighting Scots.
