Newman Leads NCAC Decathlon

Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) was leading the field after the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference decathlon championship, hosted by Oberlin College on Saturday in Oberlin.

Newman totaled 3510 points through the first 5 events of the competition.  Sophomore Jayson Blankenship (Medina) finished the day with 2505 points and was seventh in the standings.

Newman finished the 100-meter dash in :11.37, the second-best time of the meet, for 780 points.  He followed with a leap of 21-5¼, equaling the best effort of the day, and turned in the best performance in each of the final 3 events, with a throw of 39-3¼ in the shot put, an effort of 6-3¼ in the high jump, and a time of :52.62 in the 400-meter dash.

Blankenship had the third-best time of the meet in the 100-meter dash, clocking an :11.56 for 740 points, and he cleared 5-4½ in the high jump, sixth-best in the met.

The NCAC decathlon competition concludes on Sunday.
