Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) won the decathlon competition at the North Coast Athletic Conference combined events meet, hosted by Oberlin College on Saturday and Sunday in Oberlin.

Newman won the title with 6832 points, defeating his nearest competitor by more than 1000 points.  His score broke both the NCAC record of 6585 set by Ohio Wesleyan's Aaron Port in 2016 and the Ohio Wesleyan record of 6679 set by Matt Hunter in 2014.  The conference title was his third in the event, following crowns in 2017 and 2015 and a fifth-place finish in 2016.

Sophomore Jayson Blankenship (Medina) finished sixth with 4996 points.

Newman opened Sunday's competition by racking up the meet's best performances in the first 3 events.  He collected 840 points for his time of :15.02 in the 110-meter hurdles, picked up 634 points with a throw of 126-4 in the discus, and cleared 14-7¼ in the pole vault to add 746 points.  Newman's throw of 151-0 in the javelin was second overall, and he finished the 1500-meter run in 4:59.07, good for fifth overall.

On Saturday, Newman finished the 100-meter dash in :11.37, the second-best time of the meet, for 780 points.  He followed with a leap of 21-5¼, equaling the best effort of the day, and turned in the best performance in each of the final 3 events, with a throw of 39-3¼ in the shot put, an effort of 6-3¼ in the high jump, and a time of :52.62 in the 400-meter dash.

Blankenship had the meet's second-best performance in the pole vault, clearing 13-7¼, and his throw of 86-0 in the discus was third-best of the day.  On Saturday, Blankenship had the third-best time of the meet in the 100-meter dash, clocking an :11.56 for 740 points, and he cleared 5-4½ in the high jump, sixth-best in the met.

The points scored during the NCAC decathlon competition will carry over to next weekend's NCAC championship meet.
