at All-Ohio Multi-Event
Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) was leading the field after the first day of the All-Ohio decathlon championship, hosted by Muskingum University on Saturday in New Concord.
Newman compiled 3303 points through the first 5 events of the competition. Sophomore Jayson Blankenship (Medina) finished the day with 2575 points.
Newman had the meet's best effort in each of the 5 events. He opened the day with a :11.75 in the 100-meter dash, picking up 701 points, then turned in a leap of 20-¾ in the long jump to collect another 613 points. His throw of 38-7¾ in the shot put brought 593 points, he cleared 6-4¾ in the high jump for 758 points, and he finished the day with a clocking of :54.03 in the 400-meter dash to rack up 638 points.
Blankenship had the second-best time of the meet in the 100-meter dash, clocking a :12.21 for 610 points, and he cleared 5-8½ in the high jump, second-best among the 4 Division III competitors, to collect 577 points.
The All-Ohio decathlon competition concludes on Sunday.
