Newman Wins All-Ohio Decathlon

Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) won the All-Ohio decathlon championship, hosted by Muskingum University on Saturday and Sunday in New Concord.

Newman won the competition with a score of 6262 points, outdistancing his nearest competitor by nearly 700 points.  Sophomore Jayson Blankenship (Medina) finished sixth with a total of 4771 points.

Newman opened Sunday's competition with a time of :15.67 in the 110-meter hurdles, recording the meet's best time and adding 770 points to his score.  His throw of 119-7 in the discus was second overall and led Division III competitors, and he followed that by clearing 13-9¼ in the pole vault, tying for the meet's best performance and adding 673 points.  His throw of 127-9 in the javelin was second among Division III competitors, and he finished the meet with a 5:11.39 in the 1500-meter run, again ranking second among Division III performers.

On Saturday, Newman had the meet's best effort in each of the 5 events.  He opened the day with a :11.75 in the 100-meter dash, picking up 701 points, then turned in a leap of 20-¾ in the long jump to collect another 613 points.  His throw of 38-7¾ in the shot put brought 593 points, he cleared 6-4¾ in the high jump for 758 points, and he finished the day with a clocking of :54.03 in the 400-meter dash to rack up 638 points.

Blankenship cleared 13-9¼ in the pole vault, tying for the meet's best performance and chalking up 673 points.  His time of :16.98 in the 110-meter hurdles ranked third overall and second among Division III performers and added 626 points.

On Saturday, Blankenship had the second-best time of the meet in the 100-meter dash, clocking a :12.21 for 610 points, and he cleared 5-8½ in the high jump, second-best among the 4 Division III competitors, to collect 577 points.

The points scored during the decathlon carry over to Saturday's All-Ohio championship meet, to be hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Selby Stadium and the George Gauthier Track.
