Newman Repeats as All-American in Decathlon

Senior Nate Newman (Chillicothe/Zane Trace) won All-America honors in the decathlon for the second consecutive year and freshman Cade Richeson (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) competed in the shot put for Ohio Wesleyan during the second day of the NCAA Division III championship meet, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Friday in LaCrosse, Wis.

Newman opened Friday's action with a clocking of :15.29 in the 110-meter hurdles, the third-best time of the meet and good for 815 points, moving him into third place in the standings.  He followed with a throw of 106-2¾ in the discus, 14th overall, for 515 additional points.

He cleared 14-5¼ in the pole vault, tying for third overall and picking up 731 points, then turned in a throw of 158-½ in the javelin, good for 10th place and 562 points, to move within 122 points of the lead.  In the final event, the 1500-meter run, Newman's time of 4:51.91 was good for 607 points and 13th place.

Newman finished with 6708 points and placed fourth in the final standings.  The fourth-place finish gave Ohio Wesleyan 5 points in the team standings, good for a tie for 53rd place among the 147 schools that were represented in the meet.  Newman was the top seed in the decathlon with a score of 6832 points.

On Thursday, Newman opened the day's competition by finishing third in his heat of the 100-meter dash, with his time of :11.79 good for ninth overall and 693 points.  He followed that with a long jump of 22-2½, tying for the fourth-best effort of the meet and adding 760 points to his total and moving him into sixth place overall.  Newman then recorded a throw of 37-10¾ in the shot put, good for 13th place and 579 points, and moved up to fifth in the overall standings.

He cleared 6-4 in the high jump, tying for fourth in the meet, and collected 740 points to move into second place in the standings.  Newman wrapped up Thursday's action with a :52.33 in the 400-meter dash, finishing third in his heat and 16th overall and scoring 710 points to finish the day with 3482 points.

The All-America citation in the decathlon was the second in a row for Newman, following an eighth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division III championship meet.

Richeson finished sixth in his heat of the shot put with a throw of 53-¾ and advanced to the finals, but fouled on all 3 of his attempts in the finals and placed ninth nationally, missing All-America honors by less than 2 inches.  Richeson was seeded sixth with a throw of 54-8¾.
