Junior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) scored 4 goals as 11th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan outscored Aurora, 8-0, during the middle 2 quarters on the way to a win in a second-round game of the NCAA Division III tournament on Wednesday at Selby Stadium.
Ohio Wesleyan advances to face Denison, a 25-9 winner over Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, in an NCAA Division III third-round game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in Granville.
Junior attacker Steven Hildebrand (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a goal just under 3 minutes into the action, and junior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) followed with a goal less than 30 seconds later.
Aurora answered with a Joey Lucchesi goal at the 10:26 mark, but Ohio Wesleyan got that goal back when senior defenseman Aaron Carroll (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) cleared the ball and found the back of the net less than a minute later.
The Spartans closed to within 3-2 when Lucchesi tallied a man-up goal midway through the first period.
Tennant scored early in the second quarter to increase the Bishop lead to 4-2, then added another goal less than a minute after that. After scores by sophomore midfielder Lucas Smith (

The Bishops rang up 3 goals in less than 30 seconds early in the third quarter. At the 10:51 mark, Carroll scored his second of the game. Tennant picked up the ground ball on the ensuing face-off and scored 11 seconds later, and Aurora goalkeeper Tyler Lombardi was penalized on the play. With the Bishops taking possession after the penalty, Hildebrand picked up a loose ball in front of the crease and scored with 10:22 to play, increasing the margin to 11-2.
Tanner Lerdahl scored twice for the Spartans in the fourth quarter, but the visitors would not come closer than the 13-5 final.
The 5 goals allowed by the Bishops marked the fewest allowed by Ohio Wesleyan in an NCAA Division III tournament game since May 10, 1989, when the Bishops defeated Gettysburg, 12-5, at Selby.
Tennant led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Hildebrand and Jeschke each had 2 goals and 2 assists. Senior Ben Rigger (Decatur, Ga.) finished 9 saves in the Ohio Wesleyan crease.
Lucchesi had 2 goals and an assist for Aurora. Lombardi and Zachary Ciupka combined for 11 saves for the Spartans.
