Ohio Wesleyan University will induct 8 former Battling Bishop standouts — 7 of them All-America selections — and a former head coach into the University's Athletics Hall of Fame and bestow the George Gauthier Award upon Jack Winters '61 during ceremonies on Saturday, October 6, during Homecoming & Family Weekend.
The 9 Hall of Fame inductees are:
• Cisco Clervoix '06 — He was an All-America selection as a football defensive end, also receiving North Coast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors and 3 All-NCAC citations. He contributed 12 tackles in his collegiate debut at Olivet. As a sophomore, he was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Week after making 7 tackles and forcing a timely fumble to preserve a tie and set up the game-winning drive against Denison. He led the team with 14 tackles for loss and ranked second on the team with 7 sacks, ranking fifth in the NCAC in both, and was a second-team All-NCAC selection. His junior year, he was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 3 sacks among 11 tackles, including a sack on first down and a tackle on third down during Kenyon's last drive to help preserve a 30-24 win. He led the team with 6½ sacks and 12½ tackles for loss, tying for fifth in the NCAC in sacks, tying for fourth in tackles for loss, ranking 16th in total tackles, and leading the league in forced fumbles. He was a first-team All-NCAC selection. As a senior, he was a 2-time NCAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, recording 3 tackles for loss among his 8 stops against Olivet, then racking up 1½ sacks, 3 tackles for loss, 7 total stops, and a forced fumble in a 21-7 win at Wooster. He ranked second among NCAC ends/defensive linemen in tackles. He was a first-team All-NCAC pick and was named NCAC Defensive Player of the Year, was a first-team all-region pick by D3football.com, and was a second-team All-America selection by both D3football.com and the Football Gazette. During his career, he totaled 20½ sacks, 46½ tackles for loss (third all-time), 119 solos, 112 assists, and 231 total tackles.
• Kelly Glassburn '05 — She won All-America honors and was 3-time All-NCAC selection in women's tennis. As a freshman, she won the No. 1 singles spot and compiled a 7-8 overall record. In doubles, she was part of the Bishops' No. 1 team that compiled a 10-5 record. She won second-team All-NCAC honors in both singles and doubles. Her sophomore year, she finished in the top 16 of the ITA regional tournament, then went 10-1 in singles (all at No. 1) as Ohio Wesleyan advanced to the championship match of the NCAC tournament. She was invited to the NCAA Division III singles tournament and finished with a final record of 10-2. In doubles, she went 6-6. She was a first-team All-NCAC pick in singles and doubles and was named NCAC Player of the Year. In the ITA Division III rankings, she was ranked No. 20, qualifying her for All-America honors in singles. As a junior, she advanced to the semifinals of the ITA regional tournament, then went 10-6 at No. 1 singles as Ohio Wesleyan again advanced to the championship match of the NCAC tournament. She received an invitation to the NCAA Division III singles tournament. In doubles play, she was 9-7 overall. She repeated as a first-team All-NCAC selection in both singles and doubles. She graduated a semester early and did not play as a senior.
• Jeff Krigbaum '04 — He won All-America and Academic All-America® honors as a defender in men's soccer. He lettered as a midfielder his freshman year. As a sophomore, he started 7 games and collected a goal and an assist. The assist was a timely one, coming on the game-winning goal in an NCAA first-round game at Otterbein. His junior year, he won a starting spot at defensive midfield and scored once while adding 3 assists on the way to first-team All-NCAC honors. As a senior, he moved to the backfield and collected 4 goals and 4 assists to rank fourth on the team in scoring. He was named Most Valuable Player of the adidas® Invitational after wins over Olivet and Methodist, and was named to the all-tournament team at the NCAC tournament. He was a first-team All-NCAC, All-Ohio, and all-region selection, and went on to receive third-team All-America and first-team Academic All-America® citations. During his 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan was 77-15-3 (.826) with 3 conference championships, a national semifinal appearance, and 2 quarterfinal appearances.
• Amy Mazur '06 — She was a 3-time all-region and 4-time All-NCAC selection in softball. As a freshman, she batted .364, leading the team and ranking second in the NCAC, and ranked fourth in the NCAC in runs scored (25), slugging percentage (.481), and on-base percentage (.418). She was a first-team All-NCAC pick, was named NCAC Newcomer of the Year, and received third-team all-region honors. Her sophomore year, she batted .336 with 1 HR and 28 RBI. She set an OWU record with 5 RBI against Thiel. She led the league in assists (101) from her third base position and was a first-team All-NCAC selection and a second-team all-region pick. As a junior, she batted .378, ranking second on the team and fourth in NCAC, with 1 home run and 27 RBI, the latter ranking second on the team and third in the NCAC. She was a first-team All-NCAC selection. Her senior year, she batted .396, ranking second on the team and at the time the third-highest all-time at OWU. Her 6 HR ranked second on the team and second in the NCAC and her 40 RBI ranked second on the team and third in the NCAC. She had the first multiple-HR game by an OWU softball player since the team returned to varsity status, and set OWU single-game records with 6 RBI and 10 total bases. She was a second-team all-conference and first-team all-region pick. Her career batting average of .369 set an OWU record, as did her 114 RBI, and 187 hits. Her career totals of 507 at-bats, 121 runs, 37 doubles, 10 HR, 266 total bases all ranked second all-time, and her 6 triples was third all-time. During her 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan was 93-70 overall, won 2 NCAC championships, and reached the NCAC tournament all 4 years, finishing as runner-up 3 times.
• Kevin Ramsier '93 — An All-America offensive guard in football, he was a 3-year starter during perhaps the most successful 4-year period in OWU football history. He earned second-team GTE Academic All-America®, third-team AP Little All-America, honorable mention Football Gazette All-America, and first-team All-NCAC honors as a senior. The Bishops averaged 5.1 yards per rush as a team that year, rolling up 2831 yards on the ground and 4081 in total offense. He was an honorable mention All-America pick by Football Gazette and a first-team All-NCAC pick as a junior, helping pave the way as Ohio Wesleyan gained 2137 yards on the ground and 3579 total yards. He moved into the starting lineup as a sophomore and went on to win second-team all-league honors as the Bishops gained school-record figures of 3333 yards on the ground and 4095 total yards. He lettered as a freshman, helping the team to a share of the NCAC title, OWU's first conference crown since 1971. Ohio Wesleyan went 33-6-1 during his 4 years.
• Lelan Rogers — He coached men's lacrosse from 1991-99. During his 9 seasons, the Bishops went 109-33 (.768), including a record of 44-4 (.917) in NCAC competition, won 6 NCAC championships, and appeared in the NCAA Division III tournament 7 times. His teams advanced to the NCAA Division III championship game once and reached the national semifinals 6 times. The 1993 Bishops went 12-2, won the MLA and NCAC championships, and advanced to the national championship game. The 1995-98 teams each won 13 or more games and advanced to the national III semifinals. During his 9 years, Ohio Wesleyan had 47 players receive All-America honors, 4 named Division III position player of the Year, and 2 named Division III Player of the Year. He was named NCAC Coach of the Year 4 times.
• Ashley Shaffer '08 — She won All-America honors in the heptathlon and was a 2-time NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year selection. Indoors her freshman year, she was named NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year after winning the 200- and 400-meter dashes and helping the 1600-meter relay team to a second-place finish. She also tied for first in the high jump and finished third in the triple jump as Ohio Wesleyan finished third. Outdoors that year, she won the high jump as Ohio Wesleyan placed second at the NCAC meet. As a sophomore, she repeated as NCAC Sprinter/Hurdler of the Year, winning the 400-meter dash, finishing second in the 200-meter dash, and anchoring the first-place 1600-meter relay team as Ohio Wesleyan improved to second place. Outdoors, she was second in the heptathlon and 400-meter dash as Ohio Wesleyan placed second at the NCAC championship. Her junior year, she set a school record with a 34-10¼ triple jump at the indoor All-Ohio meet, then helped Ohio Wesleyan win its first NCAC title in 13 years by winning the 400-meter dash, finishing second in the high jump and third in the long jump and triple jump (with a school-record 35-3), and helping the 1600-meter relay team to a win. Outdoors, she won titles in the heptathlon, triple jump, and 400-meter dash, finished second in the high jump and third in the 200-meter dash, and anchored the first-place 1600-meter relay team with an OWU- and NCAC-record 3:57.98 (also an NCAA provisional qualifying time) as Ohio Wesleyan won its first NCAC outdoor title in 9 years. She went on to win All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the heptathlon, and after standing through the awards ceremony, competed in the 400-meter dash, where she placed 14th. Her senior year, with the score tied going into the final event of the NCAC indoor meet, she anchored the 1600-meter relay team to a second-place finish to successfully defend the Bishops' team title. She also helped the 800-meter relay team win in a school-record 1:47.43 and finished second in the triple jump (in a school-record 35-5¾) and high jump. Outdoors at the NCAC championship meet, she won the 400-meter dash and finished second in the heptathlon and triple jump and third in the high jump. She qualified for the NCAA championship meet in the heptathlon and finished 17th. During her career, she won 10 NCAC championships (5 indoor, 5 outdoor) and 24 All-NCAC citations (12 indoor, 12 outdoor) and was a member of 4 NCAC champion relay teams and 8 All-NCAC relay teams.
• Kyle Sherman '07 — He earned All-America and Academic All-America® honors in baseball and was 4-time All-NCAC selection in both baseball and football. On the diamond his freshman year, he was an honorable mention All-NCAC pick. He batted .338 with 3 HR and led the team with 33 RBI. As a sophomore, he won the starting spot at 2B and went on to first-team All-NCAC honors, batting .389 with 10 HR (tied for third in NCAC) and 32 RBI. He ranked third in the league in slugging percentage (.763), fourth in runs scored (47), and tied for seventh in stolen bases (10). His junior year, he batted .392 with 10 HR (second in NCAC) and 54 RBI (shared league lead). He led the league in runs scored (59) and ranked second in total bases (104) and slugging percentage (.703). He was a third-team All-America and a first-team all-region and All-NCAC selection. As a senior, he batted .395 (eighth in NCAC) with 10 HR (tied for league lead) and 40 RBI, also leading the NCAC in total bases (111) and slugging percentage (.755) and sharing the league lead in triples (6, then a school record). He repeated as a third-team All-America selection and named first-team Academic All-America® and NCAC Player of the Year, also receiving first-team all-region and first-team All-NCAC honors. During his career, he batted .379 with 33 HR (tied for third all-time) and 159 RBI (fifth all-time) along with 182 runs scored (fourth all-time), 14 triples (OWU record), 374 total bases (fifth all-time) and 46 stolen bases (tied for fifth all-time). Ohio Wesleyan was 99-59, 46-16 in the NCAC, with one NCAC championship and one NCAA playoff appearance. A safety on the gridiron, his freshman year, he intercepted 5 passes to rank third in the NCAC. He won honorable mention All-NCAC status. As a sophomore, he was named NCAC Player of the Week after intercepting 2 passes and forcing a fumble at the OWU 1-yard line in the fourth quarter at Franklin. He intercepted 6 passes, tying for the NCAC lead and tying for fourth on the OWU season list, and was a first-team All-NCAC pick. His junior year, he intercepted 7 passes, leading the league and tying for second on the OWU season list. He was a third-team all-region pick by D3football.com and a first-team All-NCAC selection. As a senior, he shared the team lead with 68 tackles and ranked second on the team with 2 interceptions, earning second-team All-NCAC status. He finished his career with 20 interceptions, setting the OWU career record.
• Jay Tilton '03 — He was an All-America selection in men's golf who won All-NCAC honors 4 times. His freshman year, he led the Bishops in one tournament and ranked third on team with a 78.53 average during the spring schedule. He won second-team All-NCAC honors by tying for eighth place at 151 in the conference tournament. He tied for 65th place at the NCAA Division III tournament with a 236. He moved into the lineup as a sophomore and ranked second on team with 77.23 average, leading the team in 2 tournaments. He repeated as a second-team All-NCAC pick after finishing 10th with a 162 at conference tournament. He tied for 75th with a 313 at the NCAA Division III tournament. As a junior, he won his third consecutive second-team All-NCAC citation, tying for ninth place with a 161 in the conference tournament. He tied for 45th place with 314 at the NCAA Division III tournament. He averaged 77.62, ranking second on the team, and led the team in one tournament. His senior year, he led the Bishops in the final 2 tournaments of regular season, finishing second in one and then taking medalist honors at the NCAC tournament with a 142. His 68 in the first round of the NCAC tournament tied for fifth all-time on the OWU 18-hole list, while the 142 was tied for the third-lowest 36-hole total on the OWU list. He went on to tie for 19th place with a 296 at the NCAA Division III tournament, earning honorable mention All-America honors. He ranked second on team with 75.48 average that season. During his 4 years, Ohio Wesleyan won 3 NCAC championships and made 4 NCAA tournament appearances, including 2 top-10 finishes.
The 2018 class of inductees is the 58th to be inducted into the Ohio Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame and the 43rd to include women.
The George Gauthier Award honors graduates of Ohio Wesleyan University for exemplary, widely recognized, and sustained contributions to the Ohio Wesleyan athletics department, as an undergraduate on the playing fields, in the classroom, and as an alumnus providing lifelong support, interest and leadership. The award also honors those who, through their acts of unselfish involvement, personify "Service Above Self." Gauthier served as Ohio Wesleyan's athletics director from 1921-55. He was the Battling Bishops' football coach from 1921-46, the Bishops' men's track & field coach from 1922-55, and the men's cross country coach from 1955-58.
Winters was a 4-year letterman in golf, helping the Bishops win 76 percent of their matches during his career. Winters had a long and distinguished career as a football official, officiating games on 4 continents, and has been an observer of officials in both football and basketball. Winters is the son and nephew of Ohio Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame members Jay and Lingel "Sonny" Winters. He assisted in the efforts to refurbish Selby Stadium in the 1980s, and the press box at Selby Stadium is named in memory of Jay and Sonny Winters.
