Oberlin 55, Ohio Wesleyan 48

Junior guard Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) and sophomore guard Tia Karras (Bellbrook/Miami Valley) helped Ohio Wesleyan open up a 7-point third-quarter lead, but Oberlin rallied later in the period and held off an Ohio Wesleyan comeback to take a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.

After the first quarter ended in a 15-15 deadlock, Sterling opened the second quarter with a free throw and a lay-in and Karras followed with a 3-pointer to give Ohio Wesleyan a 21-15 lead.

The Bishops led by a 26-21 count at the intermission thanks to Karras' jumper from the lane, and after Oberlin opened the second half with a Leah Ross 3-pointer, Sterling answered with a lay-in and Karras followed with a 3-pointer for a 31-24 Bishop lead just over 2 minutes into the quarter.

Oberlin came back to even the game at 33 on a Tyler Collins lay-in, but freshman post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) answered with a lay-in to end a Bishop scoring drought of more than 4 minutes.

Baskets by Cheyenne Arthur and Maggie Gross put the Yeowomen up for good at 40-37 during the final minute of the third period, and it was still a 1-point game after Joiner's lay-in made it 44-43 with 5:48 left in regulation time.

Oberlin extended the lead to 49-43 as Ally Driscoll had a jumper and a pair of free throws, but Sterling and Karras rallied the Bishops, with Sterling hitting a lay-in to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 49-45 before Karras knocked down a 3-pointer to narrow the deficit to 51-48 with :32 to play.

The Yeowomen sealed the game at the free throw line, however, with Driscoll and Collins each sinking a pair of free throws during the final 30 seconds.

Joiner led the Bishops with 12 points and shared the team lead with 7 rebounds.  Karras scored 11 points, while Sterling shared the team lead with 7 boards and had a team-best 3 assists.

Olivia Canning led Oberlin with 13 points.
