The Ohio Wesleyan women's lacrosse team is currently on its longest winning streak since the 2008 team won its last 5 regular-season games and 2 games in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament.
The team spent its spring break in the Pacific Northwest, recording wins over Puget Sound, Pacific, and Linfield. The victory over Linfield was the team's fifth win in a row and it raised the overall record to 6-1. This is the team's best start to their season since the 2012 Bishops also opened the season by winning 6 of their first 7 outings.
"We had a wonderful trip to the Pacific Northwest," said head coach Patricia Ryan. "The teams we played were all awesome hosts and we saw some really tough competition, especially in our last game."
Junior attacker Sloane Baumgartner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) scored 16 goals and had 5 assists during the week. As of March 19, she leads the league with 31 goals through 7 games after scoring 42 all last season.
"The team chemistry is very strong this year compared to years past," said Baumgartner. "The team is starting to buy into the program, which is helping us grow and compete in every game."
Ryan believes Baumgartner is doing a great job switching up her shot, which helps her get more looks at the goal. Baumgartner favors the right-hand-side, arm-high shot, but now she is beginning to work on new fakes, shooting low, and using her left hand.
"We have gone out of our comfort zone to work on a lot of new things, but the hard work is paying off," said Ryan. "We are off to a great start and have had some big team wins."
Ryan is proud of the team and mentions they are looking forward to being back in season to face competition with newfound confidence that the team lacked last season. She plans to keep the team running to continue working on their speed.
"The biggest difference from last year is conditioning," said Baumgartner. "The team worked very hard in the offseason to accomplish our goals and I am very excited to see us reach them."
The team is excited to be back on campus and to begin NCAC competition. The conference schedule begins on Saturday, when the Bishops visit Kenyon.
