Junior midfielder Lucas Smith (Purcellville, Va./Woodgrove) scored 4 goals during the second quarter, including 3 during a key 5-0 run to end the half, to help Ohio Wesleyan pull away for a non-conference win over Alma on Thursday at Selby Stadium.
The Bishops raced to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter, collecting goals from 7 different players with the help of 4 assists by senior attacker Jack Jeschke (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy).
Smith opened the second quarter with a goal, but the Fighting Scots rallied with a pair of scores from Jared Nycz and one by Connor Alley to close to within 9-4 with 4:42 left in the first half.
On the ensuing face-off, senior defenseman Jake Worrell (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) drifted toward the Alma goal, where Jeschke found him open, and Worrell found the back of the net just 16 seconds after the previous Fighting Scot goal. Worrell's goal kicked off a 5-0 Ohio Wesleyan run that saw Smith score 3 times and senior attacker Max Tennant (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) add a goal.
Senior midfielder Cole Jamieson (Okemos, Mich.) and Smith opened the second half with goals, and the Bishop lead would remain in double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Smith led the Bishops with 6 goals, while Jeschke racked up 7 assists and Tennant contributed 4 goals and an assist. Sophomore Zach Brasser (Westport, Conn./Millbrook (N.Y.) School) recorded 6 saves during the first 39-plus minutes, junior Joey Sichenzia (Sayville, N.Y.) had 2 saves in 13 minutes of action, and freshman Gabe Tonucci (Cincinnati/Milford) made 2 saves during the fourth quarter.
Alley had 3 goals for the Fighting Scots. Michael Donahue was credited with 20 saves for Alma.
