Sophomore midfielder Jenn Douglas (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scored to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 5-4 midway through the first half, but Wittenberg held off the Bishop comeback and went on to record a North Coast Athletic Conference win on Sunday at Selby Stadium.
Emily Wadds put the Tigers on the scoreboard with a pair of free-position shots in the opening minutes of the game.
Junior attacker Sloane Baumgartner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) answered with a goal less than a minute later, but Wittenberg countered with a 3-1 burst that included a pair of goals from Gretchen Burkey, the latter giving the visitors a 5-2 lead with 23:15 left in the first half.
Baumgartner and Douglas tallied goals less than a minute apart to bring the Bishops within 5-4 at the 19:40 mark, but the Tigers answered by scoring the next 3 goals of the game, with 2 coming from Josee Clayton, to extend the margin to 8-4.
Sophomore attacker Megan McElgunn (Cohasset, Mass.) rang up a goal during the closing seconds of the first half to make it an 8-5 game, and Ohio Wesleyan was still within 10-7 after back-to-back Baumgartner goals midway through the second half, but Gretchen Burkey and Wadds responded with goals for Wittenberg to push the lead to 12-7.
Douglas, Baumgartner, and McElgunn tallied goals as Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 12-10 with 5:36 remaining, but that was as close as the Bishops would come.
Baumgartner led the Bishops with 5 goals, while McElgunn finished with 3 goals and an assist and Douglas had 2 goals and 3 assists. Senior Kelly Coffyn (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) was credited with a career-high 25 saves, tying for fifth place on the Ohio Wesleyan single-game list. The last Ohio Wesleyan keeper to record 25 saves in a game was Renee Hauer at Earlham on April 21, 1994.
