Senior guard Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) scored 5 points and sophomore post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) had 4 during a 9-0 run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and Sterling reached a career milestone as the Bishops defeated Kenyon in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday in Gambier.
Kenyon had taken a 45-44 lead on a 3-pointer by Madelyn Anderson midway through the third quarter, capping a 7-0 spurt for the Ladies.
Sterling converted a 3-point play to kick off the Bishops' 9-0 run, then followed with a lay-in just 14 seconds later. Joiner added a jumper from the lane and a lay-in to stretch the Ohio Wesleyan lead to 53-45 with 1:16 left in the quarter.
The Ladies closed to within 53-50 on Ellie Schaub's 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter, but the Bishops responded by scoring the first 5 points of the fourth period, with sophomore guard Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) sinking a pair of free throws and senior point guard Meghann Dunning (Mentor/Lake Catholic) adding a 3-pointer.
Kenyon's Amanda Carroll sank a lay-in to narrow the deficit to 62-58 at the midway point of the period, but Sterling drained a pair of free throws and Joiner followed with a jumper to push the lead to 8, and Kenyon came no closer than 6 points during the remainder of the contest.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 17-11 lead after the first quarter, and the Bishops stretched the margin to 12 points with the help of 3-pointers from senior guard Nicole Popovich (Rocky River) and Sterling. Kenyon closed the first half with a 6-0 run that included a pair of Bridget Molnar hoops, and the Ladies' 7-0 third-quarter run resulted in the 45-44 lead.
Joiner led the Bishops with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
Sterling finished with 21 points, raising her career total to 1000. She is the 16th Ohio Wesleyan women's basketball player to reach that mark.
Paige Matijasich had 21 points for Kenyon.
