Sophomore post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) scored 6 points during a game-opening 13-1 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Allegheny on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Senior guard Meghan Dunning (Mentor/Lake Catholic) canned a jumper just 6 seconds into the game, and Joiner and senior guard Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) followed with lay-ins before senior guard Nicole Popovich (Rocky River) converted a 3-point play for a 9-0 Bishop lead just over 90 seconds into the action.
Zoe Soilis hit the second of 2 free throws to put the Gators on the scoreboard at the 7:48 mark, but the Bishops countered with a pair of buckets by Joiner to stretch the lead to 13-1 with 6:34 left in the opening quarter.
The Gators closed to within 15-6 on a Julianna Skowron jumper later in the first period, only to see Ohio Wesleyan answer with a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Leah Maniaci (Marion/Pleasant) and buckets from Dunning and Joiner to push the lead to 22-6.
Allegheny scored the final 5 points of the period and opened the second quarter with a Soilis jumper to pull within 22-13, and the Gators were still within 31-24 after another Skowron jumper midway through the second quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan went on a 12-2 run that included 3-pointers by Dunning and Popovich and baskets from Joiner and Sterling. The Bishops would take a 46-29 lead at the break, then opened the second half with a 7-0 run that included hoops from Popovich, sophomore guard Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy), and Joiner, and the margin would remain at least 20 points until the closing minutes of the game.
Sterling led the Bishops with 19 points. Joiner finished with 16 points and team bests of 9 points and 6 assists. Maniaci scored 14 points, Dunning added 12 points, and Popovich contributed 11 points.
Youdell led Allegheny with 14 points.
