Battling Bishop Update: Women's Swimming & Diving

11/18/2020 3:00:00 PM

Catch up with the Ohio Wesleyan women's swimming & diving team!

Head Coach:
  Dick Hawes

Last year:  4-7 in dual meets; 6th of 9 at North Coast Athletic Conference championship

This year:  24 student-athletes on campus, 1 remote learner

What does a practice look like?
"We have 2 groups, based on USA Swimming recommendations," Hawes said.  "We have 2 swimmers in a lane at opposite ends (of the pool).  The swimmers stay on their side of the lane.  Each lane does the same practice but they start on opposite ends."

What kind of competition have you had during the fall?
"We're gearing up for a virtual invitational to be hosted by DePauw and Wabash the week prior to Thanksgiving.  We'll swim all events here and upload the results, and they'll compile all of the results.  All of the schools will be swimming remotely and sending in results.

"Different schools will be doing different days and different formats.  We are splitting it into 3 days -- November 20, 21, and 22 -- which would be over the normal weekend of our Corbiere-Merion Invitational."

What do you hope to carry over from the fall semester to the spring semester?
"When (the student-athletes) go home, everyone has different opportunities.  We have to carry over whatever fitness we can, but different states have different guidelines, and there are some states where pools aren't open.  We'll kind of have to start over."

What could winter/spring seasons look like?
"We're targeting a meet at the end of March.  It probably will be another virtual meet.  We're also hoping to do a couple of in-person meets, but that's still pending with travel and other guidelines.

"(As of now), there is still an NCAA Division III championship scheduled, but some of the top schools are not competing next semester."
