Hawes Sets Pair of School Records at NCAC Championship

Senior Colin Hawes (Delaware/Columbus St. Charles) set a pair of school records and junior Liam Dooley (Castle Rock, Colo./Valor Christian) and senior Iain Anderson (Monterey, Calif./Home) advanced to championship finals for Ohio Wesleyan during the fourth and final day of the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet, hosted by Denison University on Saturday in Granville.

Kenyon won the meet with 1913 points to 1765 for Denison.  Wabash finished third with 1264 points, followed by DePauw (1022), Wooster (900), Allegheny (768½), Ohio Wesleyan (670½), Oberlin (494), Wittenberg (412), and Hiram (8).

Hawes placed seventh in the 1650 freestyle in 16:17.04, breaking the school record of 16:25.85 set by Bob LeRoy in 1990.  He finished his first 1000 yards of the race in 9:53.44, breaking the school record of 9:55.16, also set by Bob LeRoy in 1990.  Hawes' time in the 1650 freestyle was less than half a second off the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III championship meet.

Dooley and Anderson advanced to the championship final of the 100 IM, with Dooley placing sixth in :54.08 and Anderson finishing seventh in :54.17.

Other standouts for the Bishops included senior Aman Ngqakayi (Yellow Springs), who finished 11th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.96; freshman Ian Jarvis (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), who finished 13th in the 100 IM in :56.98; sophomore Eric Blessman (Royal Oak, Mich.), who placed 16th in the 1650 freestyle in 17:55.02 and 27th in the 200 butterfly in 2:17.19; junior Tyler Bell (Newberg, Ore./Senior), who was 17th in the 100 freestyle in :48.06; freshman Aamir Motiwala (Karachi, Pakistan/Karachi Grammar School), who was 17th in the 1650 freestyle in 17:55.11; freshman Owen Kennedy (Columbus/Bishop Hartley), who placed 21st in the 100 freestyle in :49.12; junior Max Mitchell (Marion/Harding), who finished 23rd in the 100 freestyle in :50.02; freshman David Gale (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum Senior), who was 24th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.92; and sophomore Justin Petty (Cincinnati/West Clermont), who finished 26th in the 100 freestyle in :50.46.

The Bishop 400 freestyle relay team of Ngqakayi, Anderson, Hawes, and Dooley finished fifth in 3:10.15.
