Ohio Wesleyan 59, Oberlin 48
Senior guard Claire Sterling (West Jefferson) scored 5 points during an 8-0 third-quarter run that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and the Bishops pulled away during the fourth quarter for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Oberlin on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Ohio Wesleyan raced to an early 8-1 lead less than 3 minutes into the game with the help of 3 pointers by senior guard Nicole Popovich (Rocky River) and sophomore guard Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy), and a pair of hoops from sophomore post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) sparked the Bishop lead to 14-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Bishops still led, 21-15, midway through the second quarter, but Oberlin finished the half with a 10-2 run, evening the game on a Sammy Spanier jumper with just over a minute to play and taking the lead on Jasmine Sorrells' lay-in with :32 to go.
Oberlin took a 29-25 lead on an Ally Driscoll jumper early in the second half when Ohio Wesleyan made its move. Sterling drove for a lay-in, then converted a 3-point play to put the Bishops up by a point. A Joiner free throw and a fast-break lay-in by sophomore guard Leah Maniaci (Marion/Pleasant) resulted in a 33-29 margin midway through the quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, Joiner connected on back-to-back buckets and Sterling followed with a lay-in to stretch the margin to 48-39, and another Maniaci fast-break lay-in moved the lead into double digits.
The Yeowomen rallied, but were not able to come closer than 9 points.
Sterling led the Bishops with 18 points, while Joiner added 17 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Popovich led the team with 3 assists.
Sorrells scored 14 points for Oberlin.
