Marietta 2, Ohio Wesleyan 1

Marietta pushed across 2 runs in the second inning and withstood a late Ohio Wesleyan rally as the 15th-ranked Pioneers edged the Bishops in non-conference action on Wednesday in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the top of the second inning, loading the bases on a single by junior second baseman Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk) and walks to senior outfielder Jon Erhard (Newark/Newark Catholic) and sophomore third baseman Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), but Pioneer starter Gino Sabatine retired senior second baseman Carter Franklin (Wooster/Canton Central Catholic) on strikes to end the inning.

The Pioneers took the lead in the bottom of the frame.  Tate Engle opened the inning with an infield single and Drew Holderbach followed with an infield single, with the runners moving up a base on Franklin's throwing error on the play.  Drew Wilkinson followed with a single to score Engle and send Holderbach to third, and Holderbach came home on Jared Weiss' sacrifice fly.

With 2 down in the Bishop eighth inning, senior shortstop C.J. Colson (Beachwood) drew a walk, senior first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) lined a single to send Colson to third, and junior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) singled home Colson to bring the Bishops within 2-1.  Marietta reliever Justin Aviles came into the game and got Harper on a fly ball to left to get out of the inning.

Senior righthander Justin Grubb (Pickerington/North) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 7 hits and striking out 6 while walking none in 6.1 innings of work.

Sabatine went 7.2 innings to record the win for Marietta, and Aviles got the final 4 outs for the save.
