Senior outfielder Jon Erhard (Newark/Newark Catholic) lined a 2-run double to cap a 5-run third inning that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and senior first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) and junior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) slammed home runs as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Capital in the nightcap of a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at Littick Field.
In the opener, the Crusaders erupted for 7 runs in the third inning and went on to take the win.
Sophomore outfielder Connor Shields (Columbus/West Jefferson) led off the third inning of the nightcap with a single and freshman second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) followed with a walk before sophomore third baseman Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) plated a run with a bunt single. Senior shortstop C.J. Colson (Beachwood) was hit by a pitch to fill the sacks before McWilliams singled home a run for a 2-0 Bishop lead. Antle forced the lead run at the plate for the first out, but Colson scored when Crusader shortstop Drew Ellis misplayed a ball off the bat of junior Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk). One out later, Erhard doubled to right to score McWilliams and Antle for a 5-0 Bishop lead.
Capital got one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Cole Callaghan, but McWilliams answered with an opposite-field shot to left in the bottom of the inning.
Antle added a solo homer in the top of the seventh to wrap up the Bishop scoring.
McWilliams went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, while junior Zack Stiteler (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) and Spranger each went 2-for-4 and Antle finished at 2-for-5 with 3 runs scored.
Senior righthander Chris Punka (Tallmadge/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) pitched the first 5.0 innings, scattering 6 hits and striking out 6 while walking one, and junior righthander Ethan Soderna (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) worked the final 4.0 innings, fanning 8, to record his first save of the season.
Brennon Newell was the starting and losing pitcher for Capital.
The opener saw the Crusaders take an early lead on Ellis' 2-run single in the second, then strike for 7 runs in the third with the help of a 2-run single by Konnor Black, a 2-run single by Logan White, and 4 Ohio Wesleyan errors in the frame.
Harper and Stiteler knocked in runs to bring the Bishops within 5-2 in the fourth, Antle and Harper plated runs in the fifth, and Neff singled home 2 runs in the eighth for Ohio Wesleyan.
Antle and Harper each went 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Justin Grubb (Pickerington/North) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
Scott Gutstein worked the first 7.1 innings, scattering 9 hits, to collect the win for Capital.
