Sophomore outfielder Connor Shields (Columbus/West Jefferson) lined a 2-run double to highlight a 5-run third inning and Ohio Wesleyan went on to defeat Bridgewater State on Monday evening in Port Charlotte, Fla.
In Monday's opener, junior second baseman Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk) delivered a 2-run single to give the Bishops a 2-1 lead, but Swarthmore scored the next 12 runs and went on to the win.
Against Bridgewater State, senior first baseman Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights) led off the third inning with a single, and a walk to junior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) and a Harper single filled the bases. Shields followed with a double to left center, scoring 2 runs, with Harper scoring on Bear centerfielder Michael Catanoso's throwing error on the play. Shields eventually came in to score on a wild pitch and freshman second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) closed out the inning with an RBI single.
The Bears pushed across a run on Colin Josselyn's sacrifice fly in the sixth, but the Bishops got the run back in the bottom of the inning when senior shortstop C.J. Colson (Beachwood) led off with a walk, moved to second when McWilliams was hit by a pitch, took third on Antle's sacrifice, and scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman lefthander Ryan Ebeling (Dublin/Coffman) and sophomore righthander Charlie Neel (Shaker Heights) combined on a 6-hitter, with Ebeling working the first 6.0 innings to record the win and Neel finishing up to collect a save.
McWilliams went 2-for-3 and senior outfielder Jon Erhard (Newark/Newark Catholic) was 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops tied a school record by turning 4 double plays in the game.
Lucas DiTondo was the starting and losing pitcher for Bridgewater State.
In the opener, Swarthmore jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a 2-out double by Cole Beeker and an RBI single by Jared Gillen.
Ohio Wesleyan countered with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame, with Colson hit by a pitch to open the frame and McWilliams following with a single. After a double steal, both runners scored on a single by Harper.
Austin Burgess tied the game with a solo homer in the top of the second, and the Garnet scored 6 runs in the sixth, highlighted by Josh Bein's 2-run single. Swarthmore added 5 more runs in the seventh, with Luke Mutz singling home 2 runs.
Harper, McWilliams, and sophomore third baseman Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) each went 2-for-4 for Ohio Wesleyan. Senior righthander Seth Pritchett (Centerville) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.
Matteo Sollecito worked the first 6.0 innings to record the win for Swarthmore.
