Zach Shahrokhi takes over as head coach of the Ohio Wesleyan men's golf team, making the transition from player to coach during a time in which "normal" can change from one day to the next.
"Making the adjustment from player to coach has been really fun," said Shahrokhi. "The transition has been going well, and I am feeling more comfortable as a coach every day."
Shahrokhi believes this job is a great opportunity to give back to the program that has helped shape him as an individual. He loves Ohio Wesleyan, Delaware, and golf so he is very excited to be back.
A 3-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference selection during his time at Ohio Wesleyan, Shahrokhi earned second-team All-NCAC honors his senior year, tying for sixth place in the conference standings. He was an honorable mention all-conference selection in 2016 and 2017. He graduated in 2018 with a major in accounting.
"My time as a student-athlete at OWU has made a huge impact on the person that I am today," said Shahrokhi. "The golf program helped me to develop socially, athletically, and provided me with memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Although there will be no tournaments for the team to compete in this fall, Shahrokhi is taking this time to focus on fundamentals, team building, and preparing for the return to competition in the spring of 2021.
"Without competitive play, we have been finding ways to simulate competitive situations within our team which will mentally prepare us for the conference tournament this spring," said Shahrokhi.
Shahrokhi worked as a player service leader and associate at the Country Club of Loch Lloyd in Beloit, Mo., during 2019. After completing his master of accountancy degree from the University of Kansas in the fall of 2019, he was an auditor at Moss Adams LLP before returning to OWU.
