Ohio Northern 67, Ohio Wesleyan 51
Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) sank back-to-back lay-ins to give Ohio Wesleyan its biggest lead of the game, but Ohio Northern closed the first half with a 10-2 run and went on to a non-conference win over the Bishops on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Joiner's consecutive hoops gave Ohio Wesleyan a 19-16 lead midway through the second quarter, and the Bishops still led, 21-20, after a bucket by sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) with 2:11 left in the half.
The Polar Bears closed out the half with a burst that included a pair of Kate Iliff hoops just 7 seconds apart and 3-pointers by Kasey Knippen and Brynn Serbin, taking a 30-23 lead at the break.
Ohio Northern then scored the first 10 points of the second half, with Iliff and Lexi Jacobs connecting on 3-pointers and Jaidyn Hale and Serbin scoring on fast-break lay-ins to extend the lead to 40-23 midway through the third quarter.
The Bishops countered with a 3-pointer from freshman wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) and a Denison lay-in to pull within 40-28, but that 12-point margin was as close as Ohio Wesleyan would come.
Joiner led the Bishops with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Denison added 13 points for Ohio Wesleyan.
Knippen, Iliff, and Kristen Luersman scored 9 points apiece for the Polar Bears.
