Ohio Wesleyan 74, Denison 67

Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) scored to break a 64-64 tie and put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, then sank a lay-in to kick off a game-ending 6-0 run as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison in overtime in the Bishops' North Coast Athletic Conference opener on Saturday in Granville.

The Big Red had opened the scoring in the extra session with a pair of Mikaila Carpenter free throws, but Ohio Wesleyan evened the score on a jumper by sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) and took the lead on Joiner's lay-in with 2:39 remaining.  Senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) followed with a hoop for a 68-64 lead, but Denison closed to within 68-67 on Francesca Sileo's 3-pointer with 1:57 remaining.

Joiner drove for a lay-in on Ohio Wesleyan's ensuing possession, and sophomore point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) followed with a 3-pointer with :44 left to make it a 2-possession game.  Homan split a pair of free throws at the :18 mark for the 74-67 final.

Joiner had scored on a putback to give the Bishops a 60-58 lead with :34 left in regulation time, but Denison pulled even on Carpenter's lay-in with :03.9 to go.  After an Ohio Wesleyan timeout moved the ball into the Denison end, Joiner drove for a lay-in for a 62-60 Bishop lead.  The clock was set to :00.7, and after a Denison timeout moved the ball into the frontcourt, Maddie Goodman sent the ball to Carpenter in the lane, and Carpenter's lay-in fell to send the game into overtime.

Ohio Wesleyan had gone on a 10-2 run to close out the first quarter, with freshman wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) connecting twice from downtown, and the Bishops assembled a 10-0 run during the second quarter, moving out to a 36-21 lead on 3-pointers by Delaney and Wolfe.

Denison got back into the game with a 10-0 third-quarter run that included a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Ava Warcaba, and the Big Red took the lead with an 8-0 burst midway through the fourth period, with Goodman hitting a 3-pointer and Carpenter converting a 3-point play along the way.

Joiner led the Bishops with 27 points and 7 rebounds.  Delaney finished with 23 points and Wolfe scored 14 points.

Carpenter had 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Big Red.
