Senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) scored to narrow an early deficit, but Oberlin pulled away for a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday in Oberlin.
The Yeowomen took the lead on Alyson Jefferson's 3-pointer in the opening minute of play, but Delaney answered with a hoop to bring the Bishops within 3-2.
Ohio Wesleyan was still within 7-4 after a bucket by sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) with 7:15 left in the first quarter, but Oberlin scored the next 7 points, highlighted by a Gina Lombard 3-pointer, to open up a 14-4 lead.
Sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) connected from long range to bring the Bishops within 20-13 late in the first quarter, and Ohio Wesleyan was still within striking distance after a pair of Delaney free throws late in the second period, but Oberlin closed out the first half with an 8-1 burst that included 3-pointers by Lombard and Sammy Spanier, and the lead would remain in double digits throughout the remainder of the evening.
Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) led Ohio Wesleyan with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Schipfer scored 10 points and shared the team lead with 3 assists, and Delaney and sophomore point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) also contributed 3 assists apiece.
Jefferson led Oberlin with 17 points.
