Ohio Wesleyan University senior Ari McPheters (Reynoldsburg/Bishop Hartley) and sophomore Grant Spicer (Cincinnati/Lakota East) have been named North Coast Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 22, it was announced by the NCAC.
McPheters, a member of the Ohio Wesleyan women's track & field team, was named Women's Field Event Athlete of the Week, while Spicer, a post on the Ohio Wesleyan men's basketball team, was named Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
McPheters won the shot put with a throw of 41-4½ and finished second in the weight throw to help the Bishops defeat Wittenberg, 81-58, in a dual meet on Saturday. The meet marked Ohio Wesleyan's first win in a dual meet since Jan. 25, 2014, when the Bishops defeated Wooster, 97-58. The Bishops' season-opening dual meet on Feb. 12, Ohio Wesleyan's first since 2014, was not scored.
Spicer helped the Bishops to a sweep of Wittenberg last week. On Thursday, Spicer scored 3 consecutive baskets to thwart a Wittenberg comeback after the Tigers had closed to within 51-45 with 6:57 left in regulation time. He later sank a pair of free throws down the stretch to help seal Ohio Wesleyan's 66-53 win. Spicer finished with team bests of 16 points and 8 rebounds. On Saturday, Spicer went 4-for-4 from the line and recorded a steal during the final minute to help nail down a 58-48 Ohio Wesleyan win. The Bishops led, 53-48, with less than a minute remaining when Spicer sank a pair of free throws and came up with a steal on the ensuing Tiger possession. Spicer was fouled going to the hoop and sank 2 more free throws to stretch the lead to 58-48 with :40 to play. He led the Bishops with 14 points and 9 rebounds. On the week, he averaged 15.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. The sweep of Wittenberg was Ohio Wesleyan's first since the 2016-17 season.
