Wooster 18, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Freshman second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) slammed a solo homer to stake Ohio Wesleyan to a 1-0 lead, but 23rd-ranked Wooster scored the final 18 runs of the game to complete a sweep of a doubleheader on Saturday in Wooster.
In the opener, the teams battled through 7 scoreless innings before the Fighting Scots scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth.
Senior righthander Ethan Soderna (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) and Wooster's Evan Faxon matched up in a classic pitchers' duel in the opener. Soderna allowed an infield single in the bottom of the first, then held the Scots without a hit until he was relieved after striking out the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the sixth. Faxon, meanwhile, allowed only a second-inning single to senior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City), a fourth-inning single to junior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson), and a fifth-inning single to junior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior).
Ohio Wesleyan's best chance came in the top of the seventh. Graham drew a one-out walk, moved to second on an infield out off the bat of senior catcher Zack Stiteler (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange), and took third on a passed ball before Antle grounded out to end the inning.
The Scots won the game in the eighth when Gabe Sherman led off with a single. Ben Hines followed with a bunt and freshman righthander Andy Anthony (Delaware/Buckeye Valley) looked to make the throw to second, then threw wide of Neff covering first base, with Sherman scoring on the play.
Faxon finished with a 3-hit shutout. Anthony was charged with the loss in relief.
Neff crushed a solo homer to lead off the third inning of the nightcap, giving the Bishops a 1-0 lead.
Wooster took the lead with 6 runs in the fourth, highlighted by a 2-run double by Dominic Stilliana, and the Scots broke the game open with 10 runs in the sixth, getting a bases-loaded double from Eli Westrick and a 2-run double from Sherman during the frame.
Wooster hurlers Jay DiBacco, Colin Springer, and Steve Spidell combined on a 4-hitter. Freshman righthander Jason Monos (Amherst/Steele) was the starting and losing pitcher for Ohio Wesleyan.
