Junior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) doubled in the go-ahead run and sophomore outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) smashed a 3-run homer for Ohio Wesleyan, and the Bishops held off a Wooster comeback to win the nightcap and salvage a split of a doubleheader on Sunday at Littick Field.

In the opener, Wooster struck for 4 runs in the top of the first inning and went on to the win.

Wooster had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap on a solo homer by Ben Gbur, but the Bishops answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by an RBI single from senior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City).

The Fighting Scots tied the game at 2-2 on Ben Hines' RBI single in the second.

Senior second baseman Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk) led off the Bishop third inning with a walk and junior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) followed with a single before Russo doubled down the leftfield line to score Harper and give the Bishops the lead.  One out later, Pershin yanked a ball down the leftfield line and into the trees for a 3-run homer that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 6-2 lead.

Russo delivered another RBI single during Ohio Wesleyan's 2-run fourth, and freshman second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) singled home a run to give the Bishops a 9-3 lead in the fifth.

Wooster rallied in the top of the seventh, with Hines drawing a walk, Tyler Chumita getting hit by a pitch, and Gbur singling through the right side to knock in a run.  One out later, Michael Thomas walked to fill the sacks and Dominic Stilliana singled home 2 runs.  Dean Brown added an RBI single to make it 9-7, but freshman righthander Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) got Gabe Sherman on strikes to end the game.

Harper and Graham each went 2-for-3 for the Bishops, while Russo and Pershin each were 2-for-4.  Sophomore lefthander Ryan Ebeling (Dublin/Coffman) worked the first 4-plus innings to record the win, while Monaco pitched the final 3.0 innings to collect a save.

Christian Johnston was the starting and losing pitcher for Wooster.

The win was Ohio Wesleyan's first over Wooster since May 7, 2011, when the Bishops posted a 7-5 triumph in the nightcap of a doubleheader, and snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Fighting Scots.

In the opener, the Scots put up 4 runs in the top of the first with the help of a Thomas home run.

Sacrifice flies by freshman outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) in the second and Graham in the third brought the Bishops within 4-2, but Wooster answered with 5 runs in the fourth as Gbur hit a 3-run homer and Dane Camphausen hit a 2-run shot.

Junior third baseman Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) singled home a run in the fourth, and Neff belted a 2-run homer in the seventh for the 10-5 final.

Neff was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for Ohio Wesleyan.  Junior righthander Gavin Pulliam (Franklin, Tenn.) was the starting and losing pitcher for the Bishops.

Corey Knauf pitched the first 5.0 innings to record the win for Wooster.
