Box Score 1
Ohio Wesleyan 3, Hiram 2
Freshman catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Ohio Wesleyan over Hiram in the Bishops' season opener on Tuesday at Margaret Sagan Field.
The scheduled second game of the doubleheader was called because of darkness with Ohio Wesleyan holding a 7-1 lead after 3 innings. The game will not be resumed.
Hiram had threatened to break the game open in the top of the 10th. With the international tiebreaker in effect, Hiram's Larissa Baeza was placed on second to open the inning. Ryleigh Webb beat out a bunt single and Abriana Schwartz walked to load the bases with nobody out. Melissa Galindo followed with a fly ball to center, and when Baeza tested the arm of senior outfielder Aimee Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley), Duckworth delivered a strike to the plate that easily cut down the Terrier runner and preserved the 2-2 tie. Giselle Bahena then fouled out to right to end the inning.
Bias was placed on second to open the bottom of the 10th inning and moved to third on a sacrifice by freshman third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark). Freshman infielder Brooke Hoffman (Oregon/Toledo St. Ursula) drew a walk to put runners at the corners, and sophomore shortstop Carly Schafer (Tiffin/Columbian), replacing Hoffman at first base, stole second. Senior outfielder Madison Bridger (Pataskala/Licking Heights) then hit a slow roller to the left side of the infield, and the only thing that Hiram shortstop Schwartz, charging on the play, could try was to scoop the ball toward the plate. Schwartz got the ball to Terrier catcher Bahena, but not in time to get Bias, ending the game.
Freshman lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) and Hiram's Bailey Scheck matched zeroes through the first 7.0 innings. Chittum did not allow a Hiram runner to reach third base during the first 7 frames. Scheck, meanwhile, held the Bishops to just 2 hits over the first 7.0 innings but got some help from the defense when centerfielder Galindo threw out senior outfielder Erica Buchanan (Hilliard/Davidson) at the plate when Buchanan tried to score from second on a single in the first inning.
The teams traded runs in the eighth, with Viviana Macias scoring on an infield out by Bahena to give Hiram a 1-0 lead and Ohio Wesleyan answering when Bias scored on a throwing error by Terrier second baseman Leah Valdez. Both teams also scored in the ninth, Hiram on an RBI single by Rebekah Lewan and Ohio Wesleyan on a single by freshman second baseman Sydney Hoover (Utica).
Chittum worked the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 11 hits and striking out 2. The Bishops turned 3 double plays in the game, tying the school record set at Olivet on March 26, 2006, and equaled 2 other times.
Scheck pitched all 9.1 innings for Hiram, allowing 5 hits and striking out 7.
