Box Score 1
Ohio Wesleyan 8, Denison 7
Senior outfielder Aimee Duckworth (Hilliard/Bradley) plated the winning run to cap a 3-run rally in the bottom of the 11th inning as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison in a non-conference matchup between North Coast Athletic Conference West Division rivals on Saturday at Margaret Sagan Field.
The nightcap of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out with Denison leading, 5-2, in the middle of the third inning. That game will not be resumed.
The Big Red had taken the lead in the top of the 11th. With the international tiebreaker in effect, Sam Kline opened the inning on second base and moved to third on a sacrifice by Caitlin Ellwanger. Jessica Hopkins then sent a grounder to shortstop, with sophomore shortstop Carly Schafer (Tiffin/Columbian) firing to the plate, and Kline retreating to third, with both runners safe on the play. Noelle Chovanec then bounced to short, with Schafer throwing to second, but all runners were safe, with Kline scoring on the play. Abby Arabia reached on an error by sophomore first baseman Makenna Waddell (Marion/Pleasant) to fill the sacks, and Maggie Ballentine lofted a sacrifice fly to score Hopkins for a 7-5 Denison lead.
Freshman catcher Sara Bias (Sandusky/St. Mary's Central Catholic) started the bottom of the 11th on second base for the Bishops. With one out, senior outfielder Madison Bridger (Pataskala/Licking Heights) slashed a single to shortstop, continued to second when Big Red shortstop Ballentine threw wildly to first, and moved to third on the throw to the plate, with Bias scoring to bring the Bishops within 7-6. Freshman third baseman Alyssa Back (Newark) singled home Bridger with the tying run, and after Back stole second, senior outfielder Erica Buchanan (Hilliard/Davidson) reached on Ballentine's fielding error to load the bases. Duckworth then flied to right, scoring Back with the game-winner.
Denison had taken a 2-0 lead in the second on Arabia's 2-run double, only to see the Bishops answer in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by freshman first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) and an RBI single by Schafer.
The Bishops took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Back scored on a wild pitch and Duckworth scored on a Denison error, but the Big Red scored the tying runs in the seventh when a line drive off the bat of Gabi Dufresne skipped off Duckworth's glove in center.
The teams traded runs in the 10th, with Denison scoring on Dufresne's sacrifice fly and Ohio Wesleyan getting the equalizer on Anspach's RBI single.
Freshman lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) pitched all 11.0 innings, scattering 10 hits and striking out 7 while walking none.
Anspach went 3-for-5 for Ohio Wesleyan. Back was 2-for-6, tying the school single-game record for at bats.
Sophia Parpala was the losing pitcher in relief for Denison.
