Ohio Wesleyan 9, Allegheny 7
Sophomore second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) slammed a home run in each game to lead Ohio Wesleyan to a sweep of a non-divisional doubleheader between North Coast Athletic Conference rivals on Sunday at Littick Field.
Allegheny had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener with the help of an RBI double by Brett Heckert.
Neff led off the bottom of the second with a home run to right, and junior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) followed with a single and scored on a triple by senior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City). Freshman outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) followed with an RBI single that scored Antle for a 3-2 Bishop lead.
Senior third baseman Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk) led off the home third with a home run, and junior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) knocked in a run with an infield out in the fourth.
Allegheny closed to within 5-4 on Patrick Page's pinch-hit 2-run homer in the sixth, but as they did before, the Bishops answered with 3 runs, with Withrow drawing a bases-loaded walk and Padilla lining a 2-run single.
Neff, Withrow, and Padilla each went 2-for-3, while Graham, Harper, and Antle were 2-for-4.
Junior righthander Gavin Pulliam (Franklin, Tenn.) pitched the first 6.0 innings, scattering 7 hits and striking out 3 while walking 1, to record the win. Freshman righthander Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)) worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Hunter Lohr was the starting and losing pitcher for Allegheny.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the first inning of the nightcap with single by sophomore shortstop Reece Trowbridge (Thornville/Sheridan) and walks to Graham and Harper. Trowbridge scored on a wild pitch by Gator starter Bobby Kusinsky, and Neff walked to reload the bases before Withrow was hit by a pitch to force in a run.
Withrow doubled home a run in the third, and the Bishops tacked on 6 runs in the sixth, highlighted by Neff's 3-run homer.
Allegheny rallied in the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out and plating runs on a pair of hit batsmen. Jack Duffek knocked in a run with an infield out, and Ryan Dougherty cracked a 3-run homer to bring the visitors within 9-7 before sophomore righthander Pat Sullivan (North Olmsted/Parma Heights Holy Name) got the final out.
Harper, Neff, and Padilla went 2-for-3 for the Bishops, and Trowbridge was 2-for-4.
Freshman righthander Heath Manson (Massillon/Washington) allowed 2 hits over the first 3.0 innings. Freshman lefthander Dom Smith (Marysville) worked 2.0 hitless innings of relief and was credited with the win.
Kusinsky was charged with the loss for Allegheny.
