Wittenberg 5, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Wittenberg 4, Ohio Wesleyan 2

Sophomore first baseman Makenna Waddell (Marion/Pleasant) smashed a home run to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard, but Wittenberg went on to a win in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader between North Coast Athletic Conference West Division rivals on Sunday at Margaret Sagan Field.

In the nightcap, freshman first baseman Rylee Anspach (Dublin/Coffman) crushed a home run to bring the Bishops within 3-2, and Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Wittenberg held on for the win and completed the sweep.

Hanna Ecker plated a run with a bunt single down the first base line during Wittenberg's 2-run first inning in the opener.  Elise Freeland tripled and scored on an infield grounder off the bat of Clara Anderson in the third to make it 3-0.

Waddell belted a solo shot to center to bring the Bishops within 3-1 in the fourth.

The Tigers added some insurance in the fifth on a 2-run single by Elaina Adams.

Freshman lefthander Katie Chittum (Hebron/Lakewood) pitched the complete game for Ohio Wesleyan, striking out 2 and walking none.

Mary Britton finished with a 1-hitter for Wittenberg.

The Tigers pushed across a run on Ecker's double down the leftfield line in the first inning of the nightcap, then an Ecker double helped Wittenberg to a 2-0 lead in the third.

Senior outfielder Madison Bridger (Pataskala/Licking Heights) led off the home third with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a single by senior righthander Erica Buchanan (Hilliard/Davidson) to bring the Bishops within 2-1.

Alex Gibson singled in a run for Wittenberg in the sixth to make it a 3-1 game.

Anspach got the run back with a long homer to center in the bottom of the inning, but Nikki Hawkins singled in an insurance run for the Tigers in the seventh.

The Bishops rallied in the bottom of the seventh as freshman outfielder Rylie Moore (Noblesville, Ind.) led off with a single and Bridger followed with a walk.  Britton, who had come on in relief for Wittenberg with 2 outs in the sixth, then got the next 2 outs before Duckworth coaxed a walk to fill the sacks.  Britton then retired Waddell on an infield out to end the game.

Anspach was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan, while Buchanan went 2-for-4.

Buchanan pitched the complete game, scattering 9 hits while striking out 5 and walking none.

Kira van Ravensberg pitched the first 5.2 innings for Wittenberg to claim the win, and Britton got the last 4 outs for a save.
