Freshman outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) crushed a 2-run double to put Ohio Wesleyan on the scoreboard, but Denison outscored the Bishops in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the opener, the Big Red broke up a pitchers' duel with a run in the fifth and added an insurance run in the seventh to take the win.
Senior righthander Ethan Soderna (Chicago, Ill./Jones College Prep) and Denison's Charlie Fleming each threw 4.0 shutout innings in the opener, with Soderna fanning 5 Big Red batters and Fleming striking out 4.
Fleming got some help from the Denison defense in the bottom of the fourth after senior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) led off with a double and moved to third on a passed ball. One out later, senior catcher Zack Stiteler (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) sent a fly ball to right, and Denison rightfielder Ty Robinson threw out Antle at the plate to complete an inning-ending double play.
Denison got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Daniel Spencer led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice. Jake Welsch followed with a chopper to shortstop, and the only play senior shortstop C.J. Colson (Beachwood) had was at first, with Spencer scoring on the play.
The Bishops got the tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the inning as Padilla led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice, but Fleming struck out Colson and sophomore second baseman Reece Trowbridge (Thornville/Sheridan) to get out of the inning.
Denison added an insurance run in the seventh on a Spencer double and an RBI single by Welsch.
Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the bottom of the inning when junior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) drew a 2-out walk and junior first baseman Luigi Russo (Kelowna, B.C./Rutland Senior) followed with a pinch-hit single, but Fleming got the final out to end the game.
Antle was 2-for-3 for Ohio Wesleyan.

The Big Red struck for 6 runs in the second inning of the nightcap, getting a 3-run homer from Josh Bohn and a 2-run double by Robinson during the inning.
Ohio Wesleyan loaded the bases with nobody out in the third as junior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson) was hit by a pitch, Antle walked, and sophomore outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) walked. One out later, Padilla lined a double to center to score Graham and Antle, but Denison reliever Caleb Struewing was able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
The Bishops again loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, this time on singles by Colson and Graham sandwiched around a walk to Trowbridge, but Struewing got out of the inning unscathed. Ohio Wesleyan threatened in the fifth when Padilla led off by reaching on an error by Denison first baseman Will Krushena and junior third baseman Colin Spranger (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) followed with a walk, but the runners were stranded at second and third.
