Denison 11, Ohio Wesleyan 10
Senior attacker Will Anton (Madison, N.J.) scored to tie the score at 8 early in the fourth quarter, but 14th-ranked Denison held on for a win over 18th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan in a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division contest on Saturday in Granville.
The Denison win split the season series between the teams after Ohio Wesleyan's 14-13 victory on Wednesday.
Denison's Sam Asman had scored to give the Big Red an 8-7 lead at the 13:40 mark of the fourth period.
Anton answered with a goal with 10:14 left in regulation time, courtesy of an assist from junior attacker Henry Hasenberg (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola).
The Big Red took the lead as Ian Crosby scored with 8:32 remaining, then set up Luke Fisher with 7:21 to play.
Hasenberg scored to bring the Bishops within 10-9, but Denison's Camden Bowdy restored the 2-goal margin with a goal at the 3:55 mark.
Hasenberg made it 11-10 with a goal with :21 left, but the Big Red won the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock.
Anton scored twice in the first period as Ohio Wesleyan had leads of 3-1 and 4-3, but Fisher scored in the final seconds of the quarter to tie the game at 4.
Goals by senior midfielder Sean Gellen (Davis, Calif./Senior) and Anton less than a minute apart gave the Bishops a 6-4 second-quarter lead, but the Big Red came back to tie the game as Fisher and Asman scored just 15 seconds apart late in the half.
Fisher and junior midfielder Jack Damon (Portsmouth, R.I.) traded goals during the third quarter, leaving the score tied at 7 heading into the final period.
Anton led the Bishops with 4 goals, while Hasenberg finished with 2 goals and 2 assists. Senior Zach Brasser (Westport, Conn./Millbrook (N.Y.) School) recorded 14 saves for Ohio Wesleyan.
Fisher scored 5 goals for Denison. T.J. Spahn stopped 14 shots in the Denison crease.
Saturday's game marked the first time since 1996 that Ohio Wesleyan played Denison in back-to-back games. On May 4, 1996, at Selby Field, Ohio Wesleyan defeated Denison, 17-5 in its regular-season finale. The Bishops and Big Red then met in the first round of NCAA Division III tournament on May 12, 1996, with Ohio Wesleyan winning a 16-6 decision at Selby Field.
