Freshman midfielder Nicole Klabus (Delaware/Hayes) scored with 3:41 left in regulation time to break an 8-8 tie and give Ohio Wesleyan a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division triumph over Wittenberg on Friday at Selby Stadium.
Senior midfielder Jenn Douglas (Easton, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) had sent a free-position shot wide of the Tiger crease, but the Bishops retained possession and Klabus took a pass from senior midfielder Megan McElgunn (Cohasset, Mass.) to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead.
Douglas won the ensuing draw, and Ohio Wesleyan was able to run out the clock, taking advantage of a pair of Wittenberg yellow cards as the Tigers tried to get the ball back for a shot at the equalizer.
The teams traded goals for most of the evening, with Douglas and Wittenberg's Jessica Flick each scoring twice in the first 18-plus minutes. Sophomore attacker Grace Egan (Ridgefield, Conn.) gave the Bishops their first lead of the night at 3-2, but Kelly Mamula scored twice as the Tigers took a 4-3 lead at the break. Flick then opened the second-half scoring to give Wittenberg the biggest lead of the game at 5-3.
Freshman attacker Sophia Staples-Roy (Hopkinton, N.H.) amd Egan tallied goals to even the game at 5, and the teams traded goals thrice, the last time when Klabus converted a free-position shot midway through the half and Wittenberg's Shannon Brown answered in kind to knot the game at 8 with 12:37 to play.
Douglas scored 3 goals for Ohio Wesleyan, while Egan, Klabus, and Staples-Roy had 2 goals apiece.
