DePauw 5, Ohio Wesleyan 1
DePauw 11, Ohio Wesleyan 9
Senior catcher Zack Stiteler (Lewis Center/Olentangy Orange) belted a grand slam that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-3 lead, but DePauw rallied for a win in the nightcap of a North Coast Athletic Conference West Division doubleheader on Saturday at Littick Field.
In the opener, DePauw's Sam Haddock outdueled sophomore righthander Michael Lipscomb (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) as the Tigers took the win.
Down, 2-0, in the first inning of the nightcap, the Bishops answered in the bottom of the inning as sophomore second baseman D.J. Neff (Grove City) led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior outfielder Davis Graham (Canton/Massillon Jackson). After a single by senior third baseman Austin Harper (Sycamore/Mohawk) and walks to junior first baseman Izaiah Withrow (Carroll/Bloom-Carroll) and Stiteler, senior outfielder Cole Antle (Grove City) plated 2 runs with a double down the leftfield line.
The Tigers pushed across a run in the third to tie the game, but again the Bishops responded in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on singles by Harper and sophomore outfielder Max Pershin (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech College Prep) and a walk to Withrow before Stiteler launched a ball over the leftfield fence for a 7-3 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
DePauw rallied for 5 runs in the fifth, highlighted by Nick Nelson's 2-run double, and added a 2-run single by Spencer Youngcourt during a 3-run sixth inning.
Those runs would prove important when freshman outfielder Edrick Padilla (Salinas, P.R./Perkiomen (Pa.) School) crushed a 2-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Bishops within 11-9. Junior catcher Lucas Stetter (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate, but Tiger reliever E.J. White retired Neff to end the game.
Antle went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, while Harper and Padilla each were 2-for-4.
Freshman righthander Heath Manson (Massillon/Washington) was charged with the loss in relief.
Cameron Hawk picked up the win with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief for DePauw, and White pitched the final 3.0 innings to record a save.
In the opener, the Tigers took advantage of a pair of Bishop errors to put up 3 runs in the top of the first inning.
Ohio Wesleyan closed to within 3-1 on an RBI double by freshman catcher Tyler Monaco (Centerville/South Mecklenburg (N.C.)), but DePauw got a 2-run single from Evan Barnes in the fourth.
Antle went 2-for-2 for the Bishops.
Lipscomb worked the first 6.0 innings for Ohio Wesleyan, allowing 5 hits and striking out 2.
Paddock finished with a 3-hitter for DePauw.
