Sophomore point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) hit a 3-pointer that put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay, and senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) scored 6 points during an 18-5 first-quarter run that started the Bishops on the way to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Wittenberg on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Wittenberg's Delaney Williams connected on a 3-pointer to break a 6-6 tie and give the Tigers the lead at the 6:27 mark of the first quarter.
Delaney knocked down a jumper on the Bishops' ensuing possession, and Homan followed with a 3-pointer for an 11-9 lead midway through the quarter. Buckets by sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) and Homan extended the lead to 16--10, and freshman wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) drained a 3-pointer to stretch the margin to 19-12. Delaney closed out the run with a lay-in and a pair of free throws during the final minute of the opening quarter for a 24-14 Ohio Wesleyan lead.
The Tigers rallied during the second quarter, putting together an 8-0 run that included a Kristie Kalis 3-pointer and a jumper and a free throw from Jaida Malone that made it 34-28 with 3:02 to play in the first half.
Ohio Wesleyan responded with a 9-0 burst, getting a pair of hoops from senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) and a 3-pointer and a lay-in by Delaney in a span of 80 seconds to go up, 43-28, with 1:29 left.
Wittenberg opened the second half with a Jade Simpson bucket that brought the visitors within 43-34, but lay-ins by Joiner and Schipfer pushed the Bishop lead back into double digits, and Ohio Wesleyan would pull away during the fourth quarter.
Schipfer and Delaney scored 18 points apiece for Ohio Wesleyan, with Schipfer grabbing a team-best 9 rebounds. Joiner added 16 points and led the Bishops with 4 assists.
Kalis and Simpson had 14 points apiece for Wittenberg.
