Ohio Wesleyan 83, Denison 62
Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) scored 7 points and sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) added 6 more during a 20-4 third-quarter run that propelled Ohio Wesleyan to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Denison on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Denison's Isa Contreras opened the second-half scoring with a lay-in that brought the visitors within 46-42.
Denison and Joiner answered with jumpers from the lane, and a pair of free throws by Denison pushed the Ohio Wesleyan lead into double figures at 52-42. Joiner followed with a lay-in to cap a brief 8-0 Bishop spurt.
Maddie Goodman split a pair of free throws for the Big Red at the 5:32 mark to end that 8-0 burst, but Joiner converted a 3-point play and freshman wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) knocked down a 3-pointer before hoops from freshman post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and freshman wing Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) and a lay-in by Denison gave the Bishops a 66-46 lead with 1:29 remaining in the quarter, and the lead would remain in the neighborhood of 20 points throughout the remainder of the contest.
The Bishops opened the game with a Joiner lay-in and a Denison 3-pointer, and moved out to a 12-5 lead after Denison connected from long range again.
The Big Red countered with a 10-0 run late in the quarter, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Gabby Elliott, and both teams would hold the lead during the second period before an 11-2 Ohio Wesleyan run put the Bishops ahead to stay, with Joiner and sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) each contributing a pair of buckets during that scoring run.
Joiner led the Bishops with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Denison scored 17 points and Schipfer finished with 10 points, and sophomore point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) dished out 6 assists.
