Senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) scored back-to-back buckets to kick off a game-opening 8-0 run, and Ohio Wesleyan went on to a North Coast Athletic Conference win over Hiram on Wednesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Joiner put the Bishops on the scoreboard with a lay-in at the 8:38 mark, then followed with a lay-in less than a minute later. Hoops by sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) and sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) made it 8-0 with 6:27 left in the opening quarter.
Madison Branch scored consecutive buckets to bring Hiram within 8-4, and the Terriers were still within 14-8 after a Branch jumper with 3:56 left in the first period.
Freshman wing Kelsey Wolfe (Apple Creek/Waynedale) knocked down a 3-pointer to start another Bishop run, then added another hoop after a bucket by senior post Molly Delaney (Delaware/Olentangy) as Ohio Wesleyan stretched the margin to 21-8 with just over a minute to play in the period.
Delaney helped Ohio Wesleyan increase the margin during the second quarter, collecting a lay-in, a 3-pointer, and a pair of free throws while the Bishop defense yielded only 6 points during the period, and Ohio Wesleyan put the game out of reach during the third quarter, closing the period with a 14-0 run that included 5 points from Schipfer and another Wolfe 3-pointer.
Joiner led the Bishops with 17 points. Schipfer scored 12 points and grabbed a team-best 7 rebounds, Delaney had 11 points and shared the team lead with 4 assists, and Wolfe finished with 10 points. Denison and sophomore point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) also shared the team lead with 4 assists apiece.
Maddie Rakestraw led Hiram with 17 points.
