Wilmington 62, Ohio Wesleyan 59
Sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) converted a 3-point play to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead in overtime, but Wilmington scored the final 4 points of the game to rally for a win in the championship game of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament, hosted by Wilmington College on Saturday in Wilmington.
Griner's 3-point play gave Ohio Wesleyan a 59-58 lead with 2:07 remaining in the extra session.
The Quakers retook the lead on a lay-in by Cassidy Lovett with 1:40 left, and neither team could score again until the closing seconds, when Wilmington's Kennedy Lewis missed a 3-pointer as the shot clock was running down, got the offensive rebound and was fouled, and sank both free throws with :03 remaining for the 62-59 final.
Ohio Wesleyan had a chance to win in regulation time. Trailing, 54-52, after Wilmington's Kyria Walker sank a pair of free throws with :25 remaining in regulation, sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) drove for a lay-in and was fouled with :08 to play. Ross missed the free throw that would have given the Bishops the lead, but the ball went out of bounds and Ohio Wesleyan retained possession, setting up a final possession on which junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) misfired on a jumper at the buzzer.
Schipfer scored on a putback to open the day's scoring, but Wilmington led for most of the opening quarter, going up 15-10 after the first period, only to see the Bishops open the second quarter with an 11-2 run that included a 3-pointer and a hoop from junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), then take a 27-22 lead on another Denison trifecta late in the period.
The biggest lead during the second half was 4 points, with the Bishops taking a 52-48 lead on a Denison lay-in with 3:09 remaining, but Wilmington got a pair of hoops by Lewis to knot the score at 52 with 1:12 left in regulation time.
Denison led the Bishops with 16 points, Ross finished with 11 and a team-high 6 boards, and Schipfer scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Alayna McMullen (Canton/Massillon Jackson) collected 4 assists.
Denison represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team, joining Grove City's Megan Kalloch, Albion's Elena Welker, and Wilmington's Jaylah Captain and Kennedy Lewis on the honorary squad.
