Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) scored 6 points during a game-opening 9-1 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a non-conference win over Defiance in the Bishops' home opener on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Schipfer opened the Ohio Wesleyan scoring with a lay-in, and after junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) buried a 3-pointer, Schipfer followed with a lay-in and a pair of free throws for a 9-1 Bishop lead at the 6:29 mark of the first period.
The Yellow Jackets narrowed the deficit to 11-8 as Kylie Brinkman connected from 3-point range and McKenzie Cooper followed with a lay-in, but Ohio Wesleyan went on a 7-0 burst to open the second quarter, getting a lay-in from sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) and 2 more from Schipfer to push the lead into double figures.
Defiance went on a 7-0 run of its own late in the half to make it a 26-22 game, with Taylor Day contributing a lay-in and a pair of free throws and Taylor Steinbrunner adding a 3-pointer.
Junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) knocked down a 3-pointer to close out a 7-1 run that extended the Bishop lead to 33-23 at the intermission, and Ohio Wesleyan pulled away by opening the second half with a 17-2 run that featured 8 consecutive points by Denison and a pair of buckets by sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes).
Schipfer led the Bishops with 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Denison finished with 14 points and Griner scored 10. Homan dished out a career-high 11 assists.
