Washington (Mo.) 80, Ohio Wesleyan 57
Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) sank a jumper that gave Ohio Wesleyan the lead midway through the second quarter, but Washington (Mo.) countered with a 9-0 run later in the period and went on to a win over the Bishops in the first round of the McWilliams Classic, hosted by Washington University on Friday in St. Louis.
In Friday's opener, Millikin defeated Coe by a score of 66-57. Ohio Wesleyan will face Coe in the tournament consolation game at 5 p.m. (CST) on Saturday, to be followed by Millikin and Washington in the championship game at 7 p.m. (CST).
The Bears got a jumper from Karisa Grandison and a 3-pointer from Sammi Matoush for an early 5-1 lead, but hoops from Schipfer, sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye), and junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) put the Bishops up, 7-5, midway through the opening quarter, and it would remain a one-possession game through most of the second period.
Schipfer's jumper at the 5:40 mark gave Ohio Wesleyan a 22-21 lead, and after Matoush again connected from long range for Washington, it was Denison with a game-tying jumper from the lane. A Jessica Brooks 3-pointer gave the Bears the lead for good, but a Ross jumper brought the Bishops within 27-26 with 3:32 left in the half.
Washington then took off on its 9-0 run, getting a lay-in from Maya Arnott before Brooks struck for 3-pointer and a pair of buckets for a 36-26 lead in the final minute of the half.
The Bears extended the lead with a 17-7 run late in the third quarter, and the margin would remain in double digits through the remainder of the contest.
Ross led the Bishops with a career-high 16 points. Schipfer added 13 points and grabbed a team-best 6 rebounds. Denison scored 10 points and junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) had a team-leading 4 assists.
