Junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) tallied 5 points during a late 11-2 run and freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) buried a 3-pointer that made it a 1-point game, but Coe held on for a win in the consolation game of the McWilliams Classic, hosted by Washington University on Friday in St. Louis.
Sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) and sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye) had buckets in the early moments of the game, but the Kohawks went on a 17-1 run, with Caydee Kirkham and Molly Buck contributing 8 points apiece as Coe built a 22-5 lead.
Semptimphelter sank a lay-in at the 6:35 mark of the second quarter as Ohio Wesleyan ended its drought of more than 10 minutes without a basket, and the Bishops narrowed the gap to 26-15 on Griner's buzzer-beater to end the first half.
Lay-ins by junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) pared the deficit to 7 points late in the third quarter, but the Kohawks got scores from Kirkham and Kaalyn Petersen to open up a 42-31 lead with 7:06 left in regulation time.
Another Semptimphelter lay-in started Ohio Wesleyan's 11-2 run, which also included a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws by Homan and brought the Bishops within 44-42 with 1:58 to play.
Ohio Wesleyan was within 46-44 after a bucket by junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), but Buck answered with a lay-in with :18 remaining for a 48-44 lead, allowing the Kohawks to withstand Simptemphelter's 3-pointer with :05 remaining.
Homan led the Bishops with 13 points. Schipfer collected 11 points and team bests of 10 rebounds and 5 assists, and Semptimphelter also scored 11 points.
Schipfer represented the Bishops on the all-tournament team.
