Ohio Wesleyan 64, Ohio Northern 60

Junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) came through with timely baskets late in each of the first 3 quarters and sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) sank a pair of key free throws to help Ohio Wesleyan outlast Ohio Northern in a non-conference matinee on Tuesday in Ada.

Homan scored a pair of hoops as the Bishops took a 4-0 lead just under 4 minutes into the contest, and Ohio Wesleyan was still up 4 after a 3-pointer by freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy) made it 11-7 with 1:49 to play in the period.

Ohio Northern answered with a lay-in by Brooke Allen, but the Bishops scored 6 points during the final 1:07 of the period, with Griner, junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), and Homan scoring to give Ohio Wesleyan a 17-9 advantage after the first quarter.

Griner opened the second-quarter scoring with a lay-in for a 19-9 lead, but the Polar Bears responded with a 10-2 run that cut the margin to a single basket midway through the period, and it was still a 2-point game when Ohio Northern's Brynn Serbin hit a 3-pointer with 3:08 left in the half.

Ohio Wesleyan closed out the half with a 10-0 run, getting a lay-in from sophomore post Karlee Ross (Beverly/Fort Frye), a pair of free throws from junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg), and another Semptimphelter 3-pointer before Homan drilled a 3-pointer for a 34-22 lead at the intermission.

The Polar Bears chipped away at the deficit during the third quarter, closing to within 42-40 on Mackenzie Suprano's lay-in with 2:56 left, but Homan stepped up with another 3-pointer during the final minute of the quarter to push the lead back to 45-40.

ONU closed to within a single point when Allen's lay-in made it 47-46, only to see Semptimphelter answer with a 3-pointer, and again when Layla Dials hit a jumper to make it 55-54, only to see Schipfer respond with a free throw and a lay-in.

Another Schipfer jumper put the Bishops up, 62-56, with 1:39 left, but Ohio Northern got a pair of free throws from Aki Akamine and an Allen lay-in to make it 62-60 with :28 left.

Griner was fouled with :25 to play and sank both free throws for a 64-60 count, and the Bishop defense held the Polar Bears off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Schipfer led the Bishops with 18 points and 12 rebounds.  Homan scored 14 points and shared the team lead with 5 assists, Semptimphelter also scored 14 points, and Denison shared the team lead with 5 assists.
