Ohio Wesleyan 74, Mount Union 47
Sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) tallied 8 points during a game-opening 13-3 run that started Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a win over Mount Union in a non-conference matinee on Tuesday at Branch Rickey Arena.
Griner scored on a fast break to put the Bishops on the board, but the Purple Raiders answered when Gretchen Koken drained a pullup 3-pointer on the break to give the visitors the lead.
Griner followed with 2 more buckets, both off feeds from junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial), and after a 3-point play from junior guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) and a lay-in by freshman guard Graci Semptimphelter (Franklin, Tenn./Battle Ground Academy), it was Griner with another bucket from the lane off a Denison feed to give Ohio Wesleyan a 13-3 lead with 3:02 left in the opening quarter.
Ohio Wesleyan pulled away during the second period, outscoring the Purple Raiders, 20-0, to open the quarter. Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) buried a 3-pointer, Homan converted another 3-point play and sank a 3-pointer, and Denison, Semptimphelter, and freshman guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) also connected from downtown, with Guscoff's trifecta opening up a 37-8 lead with 2:23 remaining in the half.
Mount Union rallied, closing the period with a 9-2 burst that included a 3-pointer and a lay-in from Dae Dae Nash to pull within 39-17 at the intermission, but the Ohio Wesleyan lead would remain in double digits throughout the remainder of the contest.
Griner posted career bests of 16 points and 9 rebounds, sharing team scoring honors and leading the Bishops on the boards. Denison also scored 16 points and collected a team-high 6 assists, and Homan finished with 15 points.
