Junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) sank a lay-in to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Otterbein built a 5-point lead in the closing minutes and held on for a win in the first game of the Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope tournament, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Thursday at Branch Rickey Arena.
In Thursday's second game, fifth-ranked Hope pulled away for an 85-66 win over Carnegie Mellon. Ohio Wesleyan and Carnegie Mellon will open Friday's action in the consolation game at 1 p.m., with Hope and Otterbein set to play in the championship game at 3 p.m.
Schipfer's lay-in put Ohio Wesleyan ahead, 52-51, with 5:48 left in regulation time, but the Cardinals scored the next 5 points as Jenna Hoschouer split a pair of free throws, Haley Dennis hit a lay-in, and Kathleen DeCarlo sank a jumper from the lane.
Sophomore post Alyssa Griner (Delaware/Hayes) buried a pair of free throws to bring the Bishops within 56-54, and Ohio Wesleyan was still within 59-57 after Griner scored on a putback with :45 left in regulation time.
Otterbein put the game away at the free throw line, with Olivia Majors and Claire Radabaugh each connecting on a pair of charity tosses.
Ohio Wesleyan did not trail during the first quarter and built a 12-7 lead as Schipfer and Griner scored 4 points apiece. Otterbein seized the lead during the second quarter as Natalie Galaida rang up 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, the last of which gave the visitors a 33-25 lead with just over a minute to play.
The Bishops assembled a 9-0 run to retake the lead during the third quarter, with Schipfer scoring 7 points during that stretch.
Schipfer led the Bishops with 24 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Griner also recorded a double-double, matching her career best with 16 points and tearing down a career-high 10 rebounds.
