Junior point guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson) scored to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead during the closing minutes, but Carnegie Mellon recorded the next 5 points and withstood a potential game-winning possession to take a win in the consolation game of the Bishop Classic/Hoops for Hope tournament, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan on Friday at Branch Rickey Arena.
In Friday's championship game, Otterbein led early, but fifth-ranked Hope put up 30 points during the first quarter and went on to an 89-71 win.
Homan sank a pair of free throws that gave Ohio Wesleyan a 56-55 lead with 3:20 left in regulation time.
Catherine Or knocked down a 3-pointer on the Tartans' ensuing possession, and Anisha Chintala followed with a pair of free throws to give the visitors a 60-56 lead with 1:24 remaining.
Freshman guard Mia Guscoff (Canton/Massillon Perry) hit a 3-pointer with 1:08 remaining to make it a 60-59 game, Or and junior guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) traded lay-ins for a 62-61 count with :32 to play, and it was still a one-possession game when Chintala split a pair of free throws with :14 on the clock for a 63-61 score.
Junior guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) got a look from 3-point range with :09 to play, but the shot was off the mark, and Carnegie Mellon put the game away at the free throw line,
The Tartans built an early 8-2 lead and still led, 12-6, after an Or jumper from the lane, but Ohio Wesleyan went on an 11-1 run that included a jumper and a 3-pointer by Denison and a pair of Schipfer buckets. Ohio Wesleyan led by as many as 6 points during the second quarter before Carnegie Mellon closed to within 31-30 at the half.
Carnegie Mellon opened the second half with a 15-1 run that saw Megan Matsko score 5 points and Savannah Gibbs add 4 more, with a Matsko 3-pointer giving the Tartans a 45-33 lead.
Ohio Wesleyan closed out the third period with an 11-2 burst, with Guscoff contributing a lay-in and a 3-pointer, and during the fourth quarter, neither team would lead by more than 3 points until Chintala's free throws at the 1:24 mark.
Schipfer led the Bishops with 20 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double. Denison finished with 14 points and Guscoff scored 13 points. Homan had a team-high 5 assists.
Schipfer represented Ohio Wesleyan on the all-tournament team, and was joined by Or of Carnegie Mellon, Jenna Hoschouer and Kathleen DeCarlo of Otterbein, and Ella McKinney and Savannah Feenstra of Hope, with Feenstra named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
