Sophomore guard Lauren Denison (Pataskala/Watkins Memorial) drilled a 3-pointer and senior post Cierra Joiner (Centerburg) followed with a hoop to give Ohio Wesleyan the lead midway through the third quarter, but 12th-ranked DePauw took the lead with a 13-0 run and opened the fourth quarter with a 12-1 run to defeat the Bishops in North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Branch Rickey Arena.
DePauw won the conference championship with a 15-0 record and Oberlin defeated Wooster, 80-63, on Saturday to finish second with a 13-3 mark. Ohio Wesleyan finished third with a 12-4 record and will host Hiram on Tuesday in an NCAC tournament quarterfinal contest.
The score was tied at 39 when Denison buried a 3-pointer for a 42-39 Bishop lead with 7:11 left in the third quarter, and Joiner followed with a lay-in at the 5:21 mark to make it a 44-39 game.
Mya Shannon answered with a jumper from the lane for DePauw, and the Tigers evened the score when Ava Hassel converted a 3-point play with 3:45 left. Hassel scored the next 5 points for the visitors, hitting a jumper and converting a 3-point play, before a Moira McGinley 3-point play gave the Tigers a 52-44 advantage.
Denison and sophomore guard Kasey Schipfer (Mechanicsburg) hit lay-ins that helped the Bishops to within 52-48 late in the third, but DePauw would hold Ohio Wesleyan without a field goal for more than 8 minutes into the fourth quarter, with Mya Shannon contributing 4 points to the Tigers' 12-1 start.
Ohio Wesleyan opened the game with a 7-0 run, getting a pair of buckets from Joiner and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Elizabeth Homan (Cincinnati/Anderson). DePauw came back to take an 11-10 lead on an Isabelle Ogliore 3-point play, and a 3-pointer by Hassel made it 16-12 in favor of the visitors.
The Bishops fought back to tie the score at 25 on a Denison 3-point play midway through the second quarter, then took a 39-37 lead by opening the second half with baskets by Schipfer and Denison before DePauw's Ainsley Boras evened the game at 39.
Joiner led Ohio Wesleyan with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Denison finished with 15 points and Homan had 4 assists.
Shannon scored 23 points for DePauw.
